Institute of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy


Institute of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (IAC) was founded in 1999 at the basis of Department of Clinical Pharmacology of Smolensk State Medical Academy. The main activities of IAC are devoted to the increase of the level of scientific research in clinical microbiology and antimicrobial chemotherapy.

Main Topics of Investigations
  • Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance of the main pathogens causing nosocomial and community-acquired infections.
  • Applied and fundamental studies on mechanisms of emerging antimicrobial resistance.
  • Pharmacoepidemiological and pharmacoeconomical analysis in the field of optimization of antimicrobial usage.
  • Educational activities (seminars, courses, workshops in clinical microbiology and antimicrobial chemotherapy, development of the on-line information services, publications) for clinicians, microbiologists, epidemiologists, general population and everyone who is interested in this area.

Director of IAC is Professor Leonid S. Stratchounski, who is also President of The Interregional Association for Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (IACMAC), Head of Center for Monitoring of Antimicrobial Resistance (CMAR) of the Ministry of Health of Russian Federation, Member of the Executive Committees of the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID) and European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), Commission on Antibiotic Policy of Ministry of Health of Russia, Pharmacological State Committee of Ministry of Health of Russia, Scientific Committees of various national and international conferences and Fellow of Infectious Diseases Society of America.

Education and Training

Personnel of IAC comprises of highly educated and well-qualified specialists. Most of them have been educated and trained in the world leading Russian and clinical microbiology centers and internationally recognized. Among them:

  • Degrees of the Master of Science in Clinical Microbiology of University of London was awarded in 1996 to Dr Roman S. Kozlov, in 1997 - to Dr Andrei V. Dekhnich, in 1998 - to Dr. Tatyana M. Bogdanovitch
  • Diploma in Clinical Microbiology of University of London was awarded in 1996 to Dr Sergey V. Sekhin
  • ESCMID Young Scientists Grants were awarded in different years to Dr Michael V. Edelstain, Dr Olga I. Kretchikova, Dr Galina K. Reshedko, Dr Olga U. Stetsiouk, Dr Elena L. Rjabkova, Ms Inna V. Edelstain, Dr Sergey V. Sekhin, Dr Andrei V. Dekhnich, Dr Roman S. Kozlov.

Clinical Basis

IAC is closely linked with major medical institutions of Smolensk and Smolensk Region which allows to enrol the patients for clinical trials from all hospitals and out-patient clinics of our city with total numbers of beds more than 4,500. Among them:

  • Pulmonology - 220 beds
  • Surgery - 365 beds
  • Intensive care units - 32 beds
  • Urology - 100 beds
  • Otolaryngology - 70 beds
  • Paediatric departments - 520 beds
  • 9 adult outpatient departments - 2á995 visits per day
  • 7 paediatric outpatient departments - 276 visits per day




Laboratory Basis

During clinical trials the Institute cooperates with the clinical laboratory of Smolensk Regional Hospital which continuously participates in the Russian and International External Quality Assurance Programs:

  • Institut fur Standardisierung und Documentation im medizinischen Laboratorium - INSTAND (Germany)
